Reflexology is a non-intrusive complementary health therapy. It is a system of massage used to relieve or alleviate tension and treat a body as a whole.

Based on the theory that there are reflex points on the feet, hands and head that are link or correspond to every part of the body, so it is the application of pressure applied to these points that bring healing or relief to the body.

The belief in reflexology is that, these areas correspond to organs or ‘systems’ in the body and proponents believe that pressure applied to the these areas (remotely on feet, hands or head) affects the organs or ‘systems’ and thus bring benefits or healing to a person and their overall health.

It is a therapy which can be received by anyone at any age, but, there may be times when reflexology is not suitable – i.e. in the first trimester of pregnancy.

A well trained reflexologist will not claim to cure, diagnose and prescribe and medication .

Reflexology aims to help the body restore its balance as a whole and should be used in conjunction other healthcare practitioners.

Even after one session most people will feel some benefit from a reflexology session even if it is just a sense of calm and relaxation.

To treat specific organs or systems in the body will require a number of sessions.

All in all reflexology is a wonderful treatment for tension and stress in a body.

The initial session will require a ‘confidential’ consultation regarding overall health and medical history, and what is to be expected from the sessions

A consent form will is required to be signed, this will be given at the first consultation.

A brief history

Reflexology dates back to ancient Egypt, India & China, with hieroglyphics appearing in the tombs of the ancient kings

It was introduced into the ‘West’ by a doctor William Fitzgerald – who developed ‘Zone Therapy’

Which like reflexology is the belief that areas in the hands and feet connect to organs and systems in the same zone

In the 1930’s Eunice Ingram further developed ‘Zone Therapy’ into what is now known as modern reflexology. Her belief been that congestion or tension in any part of the foot is mirrored in the corresponding part of the body.
